It is interested in the territory between strength and sensitivity, discipline and desire, reason and spiritual experience — without reducing men to stereotypes or spirituality to belief.

Rose & Sword began as a writing project, but the questions behind it have always been practical. How does a man relate to sex without being controlled by it? What creates real sexual confidence? What does strength look like without hardness? What can traditional spiritual practice offer modern life — and where does it go wrong?
Those questions now run through essays, videos, live men’s groups, individual coaching, books and practical experiments.

The rose and the sword
The sword without the rose becomes brutality.
The rose without the sword becomes weakness.
The name is not decorative. The sword represents discrimination, discipline, clarity and the ability to act. The rose represents sensitivity, love, beauty and the capacity to remain open.
Neither is sufficient by itself. Much of Rose & Sword is an attempt to understand what happens when those apparently opposing qualities are developed together rather than choosing one at the expense of the other.

Direct experience, not distant theory
Much of the work begins with direct experience rather than distant commentary.
Kieran has spent seventeen years practising Tantra and yoga, more than a decade teaching, years living and working inside spiritual communities, and considerable time exploring how these ideas translate into relationships, sexuality, men’s work and ordinary life.
That does not make experience automatically correct. Rose & Sword combines lived experience with research, interviews, competing perspectives and a willingness to question the traditions it draws from.
The aim is neither belief nor debunking for its own sake, but to understand what is useful, what is true, what fails and why.
Men tend to learn by doing
Some things can be understood through reading. Others need to be practised.
The men’s work therefore includes movement, physical challenges, attention exercises, sexual-energy practices, discussion, experiments between sessions and direct work on individual problems.

The point is not that men never need to talk. It is that conversation often becomes more useful when it grows out of something men have actually done together.

About Kieran Dowling
Kieran Dowling is a writer and teacher whose work sits at the intersection of men, sex, relationships and spiritual life.
He has followed the tantric path for seventeen years and has taught yoga, Tantra and related practices for more than a decade, including workshops and groups in London, Jamaica, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Helsinki and St Petersburg.
His work increasingly focuses on translating that experience into practical material for men: sexual confidence, attention, self-control, physical practice, relationships and the difficult territory between instinct and consciousness.
Alongside the practical work, he writes on Tantra, masculinity, culture and spiritual communities. He is the author of TARA Inside Out and, writing as Sebastian Lopez, Give Us.
